Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly 21st November

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. With most of the United States indulging in its own turkey vs cranberry sauce arbitrage this week into the Thanksgiving holiday, activity has been noisy but light on substance with a light data week globally. Gold, silver and platinum have all teased with potential topside breakouts, only to break hearts and give back all their gains. Platinum, in particular, looked poised for new lows whereas gold and silver are making a lot of noise, but within longer-term trading ranges. Palladium’s chart maintains its long-term uptrend, but the shorter timescale suggests a welcome downside correction could be on the cards. Copper has formed a descending triangle which implies we could see a 20 cent correction lower. Natural gas ranges near the top of its multi-month range, but at the end of the day, it’s still a range. Brent and WTI Crude finally corrected lower and seemed to be consolidating ahead of the 30th November OPEC meeting. The charts suggest thought that the danger is still for deeper corrections to come although both are no longer overbought. The softs all had short squeezes to varying degrees but are all still stuck in medium-term ranges. Sugar saw the best of it and continues to look constructive. Soybeans ran into a brick wall, and the charts suggest there could be worse to come. Corn's week-long short squeeze was unwound in one day, and it is now marooned mid-range. Wheat was perhaps the most underwhelming, capped by Russian exports with an almost flat line chart. Gold 00:00:00, Silver 00:03:05, Platinum 00:04:50, Palladium 00:07:00, Copper 00:08:50, Natural Gas 00:10:50, Brent Crude 00:12:10, WTI Oil 00:15:00, Sugar 00:16:10, Soybeans 00:17:55, Corn 00:20:00, Wheat 00:21:10

Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly 14th November

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. Life has been dull on precious metals to start the week as financial markets and currencies, in particular, await the buildup to a heavy data end of the week. The passage (or not) of the U.S. tax bill is being awaited with eager anticipation. Precious metals have been range bound with gold lacking conviction but silver and platinum attempting quiet recoveries. Palladium seems set for a slight downward correction of its mega-bull trend. Copper has an interesting triangle formation that suggests some temporary downward pressure may be to come. Natural gas traded much higher in anticipation of colder weather in the U.S. but gave back its gains with a whimper. That said, it does appear to be gathering its strength as winter is coming! Brent and WTI's severely overbought RSI on both have eased somewhat, but the charts suggest the danger still lies to a correction lower within their overall bullish uptrends. The Crude Inventory data should be the first test of this theory. Over on the soft commodities, sugar has rallied as the Brazilians cut 2018's harvest forecasts. Brazil is at it again in Corn and Soybeans but for different reasons this time. Rain in Brazil has produced optimum growing conditions pushing down North American prices. Wheat feels the heat of Russia's Black Sea region harvest and a weaker Rouble making their exports more appealing than strong U.S. dollar North American ones. Gold 0:0:00, Silver 00:02:40, Platinum 00:04:35, Palladium 00:06:10, Copper 00:08:30, Natural Gas 00:10:15, Brent Oil 00:12:15, WTI Oil 00:16:10, Sugar 00:18:15, Corn 00:20:25, Soybeans 00:21:50, Wheat 00:23:50

Live FX Market Analysis - 13 November 2017

Description: In this week's webinar, Senior Market Analyst previews what should be a more exciting week in financial markets than the one just gone. The main focus in the markets this week will likely be the UK, which aside from all the data that is being released, is facing something of a political crisis with Prime Minister Theresa May's position becoming almost untenable. With greater numbers within her own party calling for a new leadership contest, how much longer will she last? And is this the best thing for Brexit? This week also offers plenty of economic data releases from around the globe as well as appearances from prominent central bankers. Particular attention being drawn to a panel discussion on Tuesday which includes Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, ECB President Mario Draghi, Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. Craig discusses all of this and more and also gives his live analysis on EURUSD (7:21), GBPUSD (9:07), EURGBP (11:02), AUDUSD (12:32), USDCAD (13:43), GBPCAD (15:47), NZDUSD (18:34), USDJPY (20:08), GBPJPY (22:04) and EURJPY (23:43).

Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly 8th November

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. Its been all action this week as crude oil maintains its charge higher as Brent and WTI make 2-year highs. This has also woken Natural Gas from its long slumber and dragged base metals higher. Copper continues to impress along with base metals in general. Precious metals also rallied as Saudi Arabia rounds up princes and ministers. Gold, silver and platinum all staged dead cat bounces, but the rallies were underwhelming and likely to be short-term in duration. With the world economy seemingly firing on all cylinders, stocks at record levels, OPEC's production cuts apparently turning the black gold tide on oil, the question is will the music stop? Most especially in oil, the scene of much heartache for traders over the last few years. Jeff attempts to answer this question. (spoiler: yes and no) The soft remained sort of, soft this week. The agricultural CFD's have been unmoved by the hard commodities rallies. The exception being our old friend soybeans which is showing some signs of life again. Gold 0:0:00, Silver 00:04:15, Platinum 00:06:15, Palladium 00:08:35, Copper 00:10:40, Natural Gas 00:13:10, Brent Oil 00:14:40, WTI Oil 00:18:00, Corn 00:20:00, Soybeans 00:22:15, Sugar 00:23:40, Wheat 00:24:45

Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly 31st October

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. This week, U.S. Interest rates are still rising, as is the big dollar, as we head into a very data-heavy week. A pending decision on the new Chairperson of the Federal Reserve awaits this Thursday. Gold continues to be under pressure, but Silver is hanging there. Palladium continues to look structurally impressive despite the pullbacks in its cousins. Copper rolls over as China stockpiles of industrial metals rise. In the bigger picture though, copper still looks healthy. Its all go in crude oil as Saudi Arabia and Russia suggest a production cut extension is a done deal. This has driven Brent through the magical $60.00 mark to the joy of OPEC and Non-OPEC no doubt. The technical picture looks exceptionally constructive, but beware our old friend the Relative Strength Index (RSI) which at these levels may suggest a short-term pullback is on the cards. WTI has flown higher with Brent, and it is testing long-term resistance with no producer hedging it seems, to slow it down. A break of 54.70 suggests much higher levels but again beware an overbought RSI. On the softs the word is Ethanol! Brent's rally has dragged ethanol prices higher which is supporting sugar and corn. Both of these crops are favourite base components for the manufacture of ethanol. The story is not so exciting with Soybeans and Wheat with both looking decidly offered as we start the week. Overall though, the soft's are all still maintaining rather dull longer-term trading ranges. Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly 24th October

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. This week, U.S. Interest rates are still rising as we get closer to a decision on the new Chairperson of the Federal Reserve. Gold continues to be under pressure, but is this picture reflect with other precious metals? Copper is on a roll as China growth and a non-event People's Congress sees Chinese retail pile into base metals. Over in energy, natural gas continues to range but is drifting higher as winter approaches. Oil treads water with the Commitment of Trader's report showing very heavy long positioning. We may need some new developments in oil markets to give crude fresh legs. The softs remain becalmed this week with range trading the order of the day in the bigger picture, despite some impressive intra-day gains during the week. Overall though, the agricultural commodities are still in "bring a good book to read" mode. Weekly FX Update - 23 October 2017

Description: In this weeks update, Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam gives you a guide to the week ahead in the FX markets. While the week may not be packed with economic releases and central bankers hinting at upcoming policy changes, there's no shortage of political events and earnings reports, while the ECB is also poised to announce the next step for its QE program. One story that's likely to remain in the headlines for much of the week is that of Catalonia independence. After weeks in which a lot has been said but little done, Madrid has moved to impose direct rule on Catalonia, who's parliament has agreed to meet on Thursday to discuss its next step. It seems the situation is going to get a whole lot worse before it improves. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, along with the LDP's coalition partners, secured a two thirds super majority in the lower house in elections over the weekend. The result is regarded by Abe and his colleagues as a fresh mandate for Abenomics and therefore suggests the period of ultra-loose monetary policy will continue. The ECB monetary policy decision on Thursday is the week's stand-out event, with the central bank poised to announce plans for its quantitative easing program beyond the end of the year. With a reduction already priced in, the question now is whether the ECB can deliver more than the market is pricing in? If not, is the market well position or poised for a correction? Craig discusses all of this and much more and also gives his live analysis on EURUSD (13:17), GBPUSD (14:24), EURGBP (15:41), AUDUSD (17:11), USDCAD (18:46), GBPCAD (19:52), NZDUSD (21:10), USDJPY (22:39), GBPJPY (24:11) and EURJPY (25:10). Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly

Description: Our weekly journey through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. This week, U.S. Interest rates are on the move and thus, so are precious metals. Which was the winner and the loser as U.S. yields rose? Is the bullish trend still intact? Copper shoots skyward as China growth turbocharges industrial metals. Over in energy, natural gas continues to range, but its all action on oil as Iraq turmoil pushes prices higher. Will this keep going and is the price Nirvana of $60 a barrel finally in sight for Brent crude? The softs remain becalmed this week except for Soybeans, which have made a break for the topside. Whats going on and what is the Commitment of Traders Report telling us about the grains? Live FX Market Analysis - 16 October 2017

Description: In this webinar session, Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses the events that he believes could have the greatest impact on FX markets. Tier one US economic data may be in short supply this week but with earnings season getting in full flow and Donald Trump never too far from the headlines, there should be plenty for traders to get their teeth into. On the data side, the UK will be under the microscope this week with inflation, labour market and consumer spending figures all being released. WIth the Bank of England contemplating its first post-financial crisis rate hike before the end of the year, Governor Mark Carney's appearance before the Treasury Select Committee will likely be scrutinized for any policy clues. Craig discusses all of this and much more and also gives his live analysis on EURUSD (11:05), GBPUSD (13:27), EURGBP (15:10), AUDUSD (17:37), USDCAD (19:26), GBPCAD (20:46), NZDUSD (22:11), USDJPY (24:37), GBPJPY (28:04) and EURJPY (30:22).

Weekly FX Update 13 October 2017

Description: A relatively quiet week in financial markets with economic releases being few and far between, the political scene being less of a circus (relatively speaking), geopolitical tensions becoming a little more subdued and central bankers very much sticking to the agreed lines. While I doubt this will become the new norm, the week ahead may not be a million miles from it as the economic calendar is looking a little thin again, with focus primarily on China and the UK. With the ECB meeting taking place the week after, close attention will be paid to comments from policy makers, although these will be condensed to the first half of the week. We're not short of the usual theatre, with Catalonia having a deadline of Monday to declare independence officially or not, the result of which could cause more unrest in the region. The unpredictability of the geopolitical environment means risk aversion is always bubbling away under the surface and could rear its ugly head at any time. On a brighter note, equity markets have been in very good shape in recent weeks with new highs being recorded over and over again, particularly in the US. With earnings season now upon us, these levels will be tested, especially as central banks everywhere make plans to return monetary policy to something that resembles normal. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of this and more, and also gives his analysis on EURUSD (8:44), GBPUSD (10:10), EURGBP (11:34), AUDUSD (12:35), USDCAD (13:48), GBPCAD (15:28), NZDUSD (16:36), USDJPY (17:27), GBPJPY (18:35) and EURJPY (19:53).

Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly

Description: Our weekly wandering through the precious metals and commodities CFD’s available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. Post-Friday's non-farm payrolls the markets had been somewhat muted with the U.S. on holiday yesterday. The softs remain becalmed this week although speculators have returned to short positions according to the Commitment of Traders Report. Things are somewhat more frisky on precious metals with Gold and Silver rallying on geopolitical tensions. The question being once the noise dies down will they remain bid? Oil has had a rough few days as short-term long speculators continue to get squeezed lower. Brent, in particular, is showing signs of life as OPEC starts making production cut extension noises ahead of their November 30th meeting. Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly

Description: Our weekly wandering through the precious metals and commodities CFD's available with OANDA. Jeffrey analyses each using a combination of technical and fundamental analysis. In this weeks edition, did the Commitment of Traders Report give a heads up to the sell-off in oil and gold? Will the speculative longs continue to feel the pain? Platinum continues to be the ugliest horse in the precious metals glue factory........or is it?? Copper is potentially standing head and shoulders above the rest. Corn still has Jeffrey rubbing his hands with technical analysis glee. But this week, it is Soybeans that are floating his silo. Speaking of floating, low water levels on the Mississippi River are causing distribution bottlenecks for some grains, giving farmers a migraine. Wheat met its upside target but a large winter crop and that huge Russian harvest cap the grains, I mean gains. Weekly FX Update 29 September 2017

Description: It's been another very busy week in FX markets, starting with elections in Germany and New Zealand and followed by a huge amount of data releases and central bank policy maker appearances. With central banks becoming far more active once again as the Federal Reserve, ECB, Bank of England and Bank of Canada all begin either tightening monetary policy or removing stimulus, officials are in demand and their comments are ensuring markets remain volatile. With geopolitical risk lingering in the background and US President Donald Trump unveiling his long-awaited tax reforms, there's plenty to talk about. Next week is unlikely to be any quieter, with numerous central bankers due to appear once again including Fed Chair Janet Yellen. The Catalonia (illegal) independence referendum over the weekend should provide an early talking point with investors already a little cautious on Spain's IBEX ahead of the vote. There'll also be plenty more economic data including arguably the biggest selection of them all, the US jobs report on Friday. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of this and more, and also gives his analysis on EURUSD (11:47), GBPUSD (13:24), EURGBP (14:46), AUDUSD (15:39), USDCAD (16:50), NZDUSD (18:10), GBPCAD (19:41), USDJPY (20:23), GBPJPY (23:17) and EURJPY (24:40). Weekly FX Update 21 September 2017

Description: Central banks are becoming increasingly dominant as we head into the final months of the year and geopolitical risk abates, albeit for now. This week it was the Federal Reserve that stole the limelight, while the ECB and Bank of England, among others also left their mark. While the week ahead won't be quite so action packed when it comes to central bank meetings and related events, the German election on Sunday and data releases throughout the week should ensure it's anything but dull. And don't forget, North Korean tensions continue to bubble under the surface and could come to the fore at any point. In this week's video, Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of this and the other weeks key events. He also gives his analysis on EURUSD (13:53), GBPUSD (15:26), EURGBP (17:30), AUDUSD (18:41), USDCAD (19:23), GBPCAD (21:16), NZDUSD (22:51), USDJPY (24:12), GBPJPY (25:25) and EURJPY (27:05). Weekly FX Update - 11 September 2017

Description: While central banks dominated much of the last week, investors appeared far more concerned with events on the Korean peninsular where North Korea - fresh of having tested a hydrogen bomb - was reportedly about to mark its founding day holiday with another test. Past tests have triggered safe haven flows in the markets and it seems the anticipation of another was enough to leave investors in a risk averse mood. As it was, the weekend passed with nothing more than a celebration in North Korea, to the relief of investors, prompting an unwinding of some of last week's trades and a refocus on this week's key events. Last week may have been far more interesting from a central bank perspective, with the ECBs dovish message falling on deaf ears and the Bank of Canada raising interest rates, the Bank of England decision this week is unlikely to be a dull affair. Especially as it is preceded by inflation and jobs data in the days before. In this week's video, Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of this and the other weeks key events. He also gives his analysis on GBPUSD (10:08), EURUSD (13:49), EURGBP (15:49), AUDUSD (17:25), USDCAD (18:24), GBPCAD (19:28), NZDUSD (20:57), USDJPY (22:57), GBPJPY (25:14) and EURJPY (26:41). Weekly FX Update 31 August 2017

Description: It's been a week of two halves, with the start driven by renewed geopolitical tensions after North Korea launched a missile over Japan and the latter by an abundance of economic releases. While risk aversion dominated earlier on - made worse by the devastating impact of Tropical Storm Harvey - it gradually recovered as the week progressed although an underlying feeling of unease still remains. The week ahead promises to be anything but dull, starting with Friday's jobs report providing additional insight into the US economy after the disappointing inflation data on Thursday. The week after see's central banks dominate with decisions from the Reserve Bank of Australia, Bank of Canada and the European Central Bank. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of these issues and gives his analysis on EURUSD (7:10), GBPUSD (9:26), EURGBP (10:44), AUDUSD (12:56), USDCAD (14:25), GBPCAD (16:48), NZDUSD (17:58), USDJPY (20:12), GBPJPY (21:27) and EURJPY (23:12). Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly

Description: This week we recap precious metals and commodities ahead of Friday's Non-Farm Payroll data and in a week where Hurricane Harvey is wrecking havoc with U.S. energy markets. Precious metals and industrials have had a solid seven days and seemed poised for greater heights. Energy has been mixed with Brent and Natural Gas trading strongly. Hear why, somewhat bizarrely, WTI has "dropped" due to Hurricane Harvey even as 20% of the U.S. refining capacity has been shut down. Over on the soft commodities, sugar is loving Brazilian ethanol while the bean and grains continue to be a mixed bag. Or should that be bushel? Weekly FX Update 24 August 2017

Description: It's been a slow week in financial markets with the Jackson Hole Symposium taking place on Thursday and Friday easily the highlight. With Mario Draghi and Janet Yellen scheduled to appear, what can we expect from this weeks headline? Next week is shaping up to be much more eventful, with plenty more data on the economic calendar including the all-important US jobs report. By the close of play next week, we could have a much better idea of what we can expect from the Fed in the final months of the year. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of these issues and gives his analysis on EURUSD (8:00), GBPUSD (9:07), EURGBP (10:00), AUDUSD (11:33), USDCAD (13:22), GBPCAD (15:04), NZDUSD (15:48), USDJPY (16:40), GBPJPY (17:20) and EURJPY (18:10). GBP/CAD - A Tale of Two Consumers

Description: The Canadian dollar is on the rise again on Tuesday after retail sales released for June surpassed expectations, at least on a core basis, and continued the positive trend of the last couple of years. The data comes at a time when the Bank of Canada is considering raising rates again having embarked on a new cycle of tightening last month. The data came at a time when the pound was already coming under renewed pressure making GBPCAD one of the worst performing pairs on the day. Not only that, a major support level has been taken out in the process which may suggest that much more substantial downside lies ahead. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of the above and gives his analysis of the GBPCAD chart. Precious Metals and Commodities Weekly

Description: This week we recap precious metals and commodities ahead of the Jackson Hole Symposium. Notable highlights are Gold testing 1300 while Palladium continues to be the metal that just keeps on giving. Oil is making a lot of noise, but once the headphones are on, we see that both contracts are ranging. Albeit noisily! Over in the Soft's, Russia is giving grains a headache while Brazilian ethanol is taking sugars away. Weekly FX Update - 18 August 2017

Description: This week has been dominated initially by lingering geopolitical concerns and then US political issues and a dreadful terrorist attack in Barcelona. Trump's woes have been largely self-inflicted and the cost of his response to the events in Charlottesville could still grow in the days and weeks ahead. Markets have been quick to revert to risk aversion mode over the last couple of weeks and while next week does offer some important economic events, politics and geopolitics are likely to hang over the market once again. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of these issues and gives his analysis on EURUSD (10:19), GBPUSD (11:01), EURGBP (11:56), AUDUSD (13:24), USDCAD (15:00), NZDUSD (16:46), USDJPY (17:44), GBPJPY (19:20) and EURJPY (21:10). Weekly FX Update - 10 August 2017

Description: Financial markets have been in risk aversion mode in recent days, with geopolitical risk driving traders towards the traditional safe havens for cover. A slower week on the economic calendar hasn't helped matters but with plenty of data to come in the week ahead, this could all change. That said, should the war of words continue between the US and North Korea, or even escalate, other matters will likely continue to be overshadowed and investor sentiment remain subdued. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses all of these issues and gives his analysis on USDJPY (7:02), GBPJPY (9:32), EURJPY (10:51), EURUSD (12:30), GBPUSD (14:10), EURGBP (15:53), AUDUSD (17:04), USDCAD (18:08) and NZDUSD (19:29). US Jobs Report Recap - August 2017

Description: As has become the norm, the US economy posted strong jobs gains in July, bringing unemployment down to 4.3% and lifting participation in the process. Still, the report didn't tick every box and likely does little to influence the Fed's interest rate decision making. Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam discusses why he believes the latest labor market figures don't change anything and what he believes may be responsible for the strong dollar rally since the release. He also gives his follow up analysis on EURUSD (1:46), GBPUSD (3:49), USDJPY (4:36), NZDUSD (5:28), AUDUSD (7:24) and USDCAD (7:53).
